Scale offsets and interval sizes

Fahrenheit and Kelvin values are converted to Celsius first, then from Celsius into the selected output scale. Fahrenheit and Celsius intervals differ in size as well as zero point.

°F = °C × 9/5 + 32; K = °C + 273.15

Worked example

Room-temperature scale conversion

Inputs: input: 20 °C · to: Fahrenheit

Illustrative result: 68 °F

A Celsius interval of 20 degrees corresponds to 36 Fahrenheit degrees above the 32-degree offset.

Frequently asked questions

Can Kelvin be negative?

Not under the absolute-zero rule; a Kelvin value below zero is rejected.

Why is Fahrenheit not just Celsius plus an offset?

The size of each degree differs, so the conversion includes both a scale factor and an offset.
